Amazing Decorating Trends for 2020

The start of a new decade is a perfect time to try fresh decorating trends. Whether you’re thinking about a minor refresh or a total renovation, you’ll want to take a peek at these trends to see if any of them will play a part in your home decorating for this year. You can make a very simple change by adding a new piece of art to your gallery wall. But if you want to make a more impactful change then try one of these hot home decorating ideas. After researching many of the trends that we will be seeing this year, I’m sure there will be at least one idea you’ll want to try.

Color of the Year!

One of the most noticeable decorating trends for 2020 will be color! Sherwin Williams and Pantone, two of the nation’s leading paint companies have both introduced the color of the year to be different versions of navy blue.  Yes, it’s back but in a different way. Sherwin William’s version called Naval is a “rich navy that creates a calm and grounding environment infused with quiet confidence”. On the other hand Pantone’s version called Classic Blue will be “instilling calm, confidence, and connection, this enduring blue hue highlights our desire for a dependable and stable foundation on which to build as we cross the threshold into a new era.” Navy provides the perfect amount of contrast in both traditional and modern interiors. In addition, it is considered a dark neutral, so it pairs well with a variety of other colors.

Color of the year

Floral Wallpaper

If you cringe at the thought of floral wallpaper, then this may be the year that changes your mind. Floral wallpaper has been a classic for years, but now you will see the pretty pattern with a twist. Large scale patterns in bold color and even some with metallic versions will be quite noticeable this year. You’ll find these pretty colors and patterns in foyers and in bathrooms primarily. But don’t skip over a beautiful dining room if it calls for a statement look with this decorating trend!

Free Standing Tubs

Another trend that is emerging is the enlarged shower stalls, free-standing tubs, and painted bathroom cabinets. These are a just few of the new bathroom trends you’ll see in home decor and remodeling for 2020. Whether you love trends or will typically go to great lengths to avoid them, these changes will add value to your home and give it a very updated look. So, get started!

Rattan and Wicker Furniture

Another decorating trend for 2020 is the come back of rattan and wicker. Rattan and wicker are popping up everywhere! I love to see this trend re-emerging. From furniture to baskets, to round ottomans and lighting, this look warms up a space with texture in a fresh and exciting way. It’s a great balance between modern and traditional style. This is another way to start fresh for 2020.

Vintage Accents

Don’t expect to see vintage everywhere, but you will see accents showing up in spindles, spooled legs, and other details from the early 1800’s and 1900’s. History has a way of repeating itself, but always in fresh new ways! Use it sparingly instead of incorporating it into the entire style your home.

Spooled legs

This year will bring fresh decorating ideas and unusual elements to the interior design world. I’m very excited to start the new year with these trends in mind. Keep your eye out for these big changes!

Transitioning Your Home from Summer to Fall Decor

fall-decorating-home-decor-autumn-decor
Autumn Beauty

When the days start getting shorter and the nights cooler more than just your wardrobe needs to start transitioning from the “Dog Days of Summer” to the cool days of Fall. Here are a few quick and easy ways to transition your home from summer’s cool decor to the warm earthy fall decor.

Fall Vignette

Want to start small with introducing fall decor into your home? Then try adding a vignette in your foyer. Use a mix of beautiful ceramics and vintage pieces with accents of natural elements, including pine cones and rustic items like twigs from outdoors. In addition, vary heights and colors to allow the eye to flow easily across the vignette.

Fall Table Décor

You don’t have to go over the top to bring a fall-inspired look to your interior space. It can be as simple as decorating your dining table with small pumpkins and a pedestal dish. Place a tall floral centerpiece with autumn colors in the center to add height to the space.

Harvest Elegance

Although fall decor is normally associated with a rustic design scheme, it can still bring elegance to your home. Instead of the expected orange pumpkins, try displaying white pumpkins at varying heights for a more sophisticated look. Stagger pumpkins on a stack of old books and vintage candlesticks to add visual interest to a mantel or table.

Getting Cozy

With cooler temperatures in the air, now is the perfect time to add a fur throw to your favorite chair or sofa. Layer some pillows in this fall’s popular colors to stay trendy. Fall decor doesn’t have to be pricey or extravagant. A touch here and there can set the tone of the season.

Add Seasonal Color

Do you want to add a punch of fall color to your home? Hang a colorful tapestry on the wall or invest in a colorful chair or couch for starters. You’ll be amazed how it changes the feel and energy of a room. And don’t forget to add a colorful rug to tie it all together! Remember to add a few accessories in the same colors to unify the space. This will help achieve a smooth transition from summer to fall decor.

Now that your home is all ready for fall you can enjoy spending some time outdoors during this wonderful time of the year.

Happy decorating!

Classic or Modern Farmhouse Style?

What’s the difference?

Almost everyone loves the look and feel of a cozy farmhouse style. Back in the day the early settlers utilized elements from their surroundings which satisfied their need for sturdy, practical furnishings. Farmhouse style has stood the test of time and evolved into a more modern but still very functional look.

Here are some defining differences between Classic Farmhouse and Modern Farmhouse style.

Natural Wood Furniture

Characteristics of Classic Farmhouse Style

  • Natural wood accents: The very first element is wood! It was abundant and therefore, became the natural building material. Many farm homes had paneled wood walls, wide-plank floors and exposed wood beams. The current classic farmhouse style often uses barn board or ship lap for paneling and wood for countertops.
  • Kitchen Apron sinks: The kitchen was the gathering place and still is today. Most kitchens had an apron sink. In a classic farmhouse, this sink is usually porcelain.
  • Furniture and accessories: Vintage furnishings are an easy way to decorate in classic farmhouse style. It’s best if they’re not in perfect condition and they could even have weathered finishes. Vintage style lighting looks ideal in a classic farmhouse especially the ones with a little bling!
  •  Fabrics Selections: Floral and paisley, ticking and plaid echo Classic Farmhouse for sure. Use them on window treatments, pillows or slipcovers.

Characteristics of Modern Farmhouse Style

  • Modern Touches: Take the comfortable, relaxed farmhouse style and add a cleaner look.
  • Accents and Accessories: To achieve this look add smooth lines, glossy accents and neutral color schemes.
  • Use Contemporary Design: Modern farmhouse is more sophisticated and uses contemporary design elements like stainless steel appliances, granite countertops and sleek lighting and cleaner lines in furniture.
  • Practicality: When designing a Modern Farmhouse design, keep in mind, furnishing and accessories should be comfortable and practical. In addition, you want them to welcome you into the room, and things shouldn’t be too fussy. The room should look like it evolved over time.
  • Stay with a neutral palette: Choose a neutral palette to make the room appear fresh and open. Cool or warm neutrals such as cream, beige, silver and grey all work well and balance natural elements. Equally important, is to keep patterns simple and contemporary and be sure to bring depth to the space with a variety of textures. Rugs, baskets and natural objects work well here.
  •  Industrial touches: With modern farmhouse style you can also add touches of the industrial style for an updated current look. For example, use a stainless-steel apron sink and appliances. The same goes for lighting, add a chandelier and pendants that have a sleek and more modern look.

Top Summer Decorating Trends

Freshen up for summer!

Need a change? Try these Top Summer Decorating Trends

Summer has officially arrived, and this is a good time to start thinking about bringing the top summer decorating trends into your home for easy room updates.

Begin this season with some of CH Interior Designs’ top summer home decorating trends that are sure to brighten your summer days and nights as we move towards the warmer months ahead.

Here’s a look at some of the things you may want to consider when taking in the top summer decorating trends of this year. Whether its adding splashes of color on your walls or switching out your window treatments to painting your front door, you’re bound to find something that will brighten your home for summer!

Energize with Color

summer-decorating- trends-paint-colors-color-consultation-ch interior designs
Which one will you choose

Open the drapes and blinds to allow all the natural light in. Then add a vibrant splash of color to bring summer indoors. This season, summer home decor is all about bright, saturated colors and you can achieve a summery decor look without having to spend serious amounts of time and money.

It could be a new set of bold, patterned throw pillows to liven up your chairs and sofas, a colorful one of a kind lamp to make a change from the usual neutrals, or a refreshing piece of artwork that focuses on your favorite summer color combinations. If too much color isn’t your thing, try blending some soft neutrals with some unusual textures and just a hint of your favorite color to make your space interesting.

Who loves Animal Prints?

animal -print-trends-animal-print-fabric-chair-furniture-chinterior-designs
Safari print Chair

Even if you’re not an animal lover, striking animal prints are a great way to bring the feel and energy of the outdoors into your summer home decorating updates. Nothing reminds you of the sun more than a vibrant animal print, like leopard or zebra. Think accent chair or an accessory with a playful take on animal prints.

You could even go for some animal themed wall art to set off your space perfectly with a touch of the exotic for a refreshed take on everyday glamor. Keep the look minimal with your animal prints, so the look stays clean and pared back. A little goes a long way!

White Wood is a Great Summer Decorating Trend

summer-home-decorating-trends-white-leather-chair-white-wood-home-decor-ch interior designs
Brighten up with white!

A great way to brighten a room and embrace summer home decorating trends is to switch out your dark wood furniture for fresh white options. Go for white painted wood if your in the market for new furniture or cabinets so your home feels lighter and brighter. But if you want to make use of your current furniture, then it’s time to get out the paintbrushes and start some easy ‘Do It Yourself’ updates.

If you don’t want to go through all the work, opt for some white throws to drape over dark wood sofas and chairs, to give your room a brightness boost. This way, any room in your home will also appear larger.

Summery Patterns

summer-home-decorating-trends-fabric-ocean-blue-floral-patterns
Try colors of the ocean for a summery change

A summery pattern is a great way to get on board with summer home decorating. Choose bright colors and bold patterns and prints, allowing you to bring a splash of summer in throughout your home. From pretty florals to fresh yellow-green geometrics to bold and eclectic prints and patterns, the options are endless. Step out your comfort zone here and have some fun with it!

Consider some fresh throw pillows or switch up your upholstery. Or you can even amp up your summer outdoor home decor with some new lounge chairs. Opt for a more season-less approach when it comes to outdoor décor.  Go for a more minimal look on summer prints and patterns by sourcing muted pastels and soothing watercolor-inspired prints.

Sunny Yellow

home-decor-trends-yellow-accents-home-decor-ch interior designs
Decorate with yellow for summer

Yellow, what a happy color! It is the undisputed dominant color of summer, so use hints of it everywhere throughout your home. Don’t be shy, go for yellow soft furnishings, yellow accessories, and yellow wherever else you can squeeze it in. From soft, light yellows, to bold citric and strong mustard tones, there is so much scope for yellow in summer home decorating trends.

Perfect for an accent wall and entire rooms alike, yellow is the epitome of summer. But since the season unfortunately passes so quickly, I suggest going for minimal splashes of yellow, like in pillows and ceramics as well as fresh flowers. These touches ensure that it’ll never go out of style or look out of place, no matter the season.

Oh, That Front Door!

summer-home-decorating-trends-front-door-paint-color-consultation-ch interior designs
Perk up your entry door!

Does your front door need a face lift? So many of them take a beating from the weather. A fun summer home decorating trend that I’m seeing more of, is vividly painted doors. Doors are often overlooked when it comes to interior design. While this idea offers something not often thought of, it will liven up the entire entry of your home as it’s such a unique option!

Choose an inviting lively yellow, or blue or even something like an orange or a pink. You don’t have to go for a color which is too bright here, as it’s not something you see every day. Even pastel shades will work wonders for updated summer home decor. If your  front door  is in good shape try repainting it to really make a defining statement.

Brighter Window Treatments

summer-home-decorating-trends-light-bright-sheers-draperies-panels -ch interior designs
Light and Bright Sheers! Lets in the light

Summer is the time to shed those heavy, insulating curtains and replace them with something light and airy to let the sunshine in. You want to be able to let the light in but still be able to block out the sun when it’s hot that comes with summer days. I love a soft flowing sheer white curtain when it comes to a savvy summer home decorating idea for the windows.

This look gives you the lightness and brightness, you’re craving while blocking out the worst of the midday sun. And the best thing about sheer white window treatment panels is that they make for an affordable update that will never go out of style.

This is the Easiest Way to Brighten Things Up for Summer

summer-home-decorating-trendspaint-colors-color-consultation-home-interiors-interior-design-ch interior designs
What a difference paint makes!

Just remember when it comes to updating your summer home decor, a lighter color scheme will always feel refreshing and soothing while revitalizing the energy. One of the least expensive and most effective ways to completely transform any room is through a fresh coat of paint.

Whether you go for soothing neutrals, or an accent wall featuring a completely unexpected, mood-enhancing color, you can almost never go wrong with a fresh coat of paint. And I say almost because while it’s great to bring in a unique hue, you’ll almost certainly tire of it and you’ll find that it limits your other summer home decor choices. So, opt for something with a timeless appeal that won’t affect a potential resell of your home.

I Feel Overwhelmed With Decorating My Home!

how-to-decorate-my-home-interior-design-home-decor

No worries! You’re not alone.

Are you one of the many people who feel overwhelmed with the decorating process of your home? Over the years I have helped many clients design and decorate their  homes. Some projects were large and some were “just moved in” projects.  And do you want to know the number one thing every single one of them had in common? The feeling of being overwhelmed.

Decorating and designing your home, whether it’s one room or the whole house, can be an overwhelming thing to do on your own. There are so many things to consider and coordinate.  Where do I buy things? Where do I hang wall art? Which patterns compliment each other? What color palette do I want to begin with? How do I arrange my furniture? And, although there are some exceptional design resources at our fingertips today, all the checklists in the world do not take away the feeling of being overwhelmed when doing it on your own.  Having someone who is like a good friend to walk you through it can smooth the way through whole process!

You Don’t Know What You Can’t See

Redesigning the interior of a home or room looks so easy on The Learning Channel.  I too watch with amazement at how everything seems to just miraculously fall into place!  But I also know, that nothing miraculously falls into place, ever! There are many steps in between the photo shoots that you don’t see to make the project come together.

It would be fun to have one of the star-studded designers come into your home while you stand by and watch as their team disassembles and then reassembles the entire place while being filmed. But trust me, most people prefer to sit down with a professional and explore ideas of what is possible for their space, on their budget, and in their time frame.

Talking with a professional interior designer should not be a difficult task.  It is our job to break down into step-by-step increments all that you wish to accomplish.  And no two projects ever have the same details, so don’t feel discouraged to ask more about what you don’t understand or what you really want to happen.  It is your home, your life and what you do inside of that space should fit you, your budget and your style.

What Actually Happens When You Meet With a Professional Interior Designer?

color-consultation-interior-design-how-to-select-colors
Selection of colors and materials for design and home renovation

Many people are afraid to seek the expertise of a professional interior designer because they think it will be difficult to get the look they want, over budget, and time-consuming. After twenty years of designing interiors, I assure you that every project needs a plan, and that is where I begin.

Step One:

decorating- to do list-home-decor-consultation

Whether you have a large or small project, I begin by asking questions and listening to your design needs, budgetary concerns, and desires for your home.  This is our chance to get to know one another and fully embrace who you are and what you are hoping to achieve in your project.

Step Two:

chair- blue-accent-furniture

Once we have a general idea of your design goals I create a design concept plan and organize that plan and present options to you. Then the fun begins!  We start by choosing color schemes, furniture layouts, and determining the products and styles that will fit with your plan. I continually help guide you through the decision making process. The greatest part about working with a professional interior designer too, is that we have so many resources to choose from that are not available elsewhere. This helps tremendously in getting the look you want for your home. And that is the part of the process that is like the TV shows; professional designers understand what you need and know exactly where to get what you want!

Step Three:

interior-design-consultation-ch-interior-designs

After working to put together products, materials and a layout that meet your needs, we begin to finalize your project. However, many times these ideas and suggestions spark a whole new plan or an idea you haven’t considered before, especially if you find something in the mix that is a must have! We can always make adjustments along the way, all you are doing is making the choices that are right for you and your home.  I cannot stress how amazing this part of the process is for clients because they realize how much time and energy they have saved instead of struggling on their own. That is why projects can be completed with a set framework. It is not just “weekend shopping”, it is a professional designer’s full-time job to get your project done so you can really start living in your home!

Where Do I Begin To Plan My Project?

It’s as easy as 1,2,3! If you feel overwhelmed by all there is to accomplish in your home or if you just need some tips and guidance for your DIY project and would like the guidance of a professional and experienced designer to sit down and talk with you about your design goals,  please reach out to me! 5 Ways to Make Your Rooms Pop with a Touch of COLOR!

Decorating with color

col·or  /ˈkələr/ noun

the property possessed by an object of producing different sensations on the eye as a result of the way the object reflects or emits light.

The magic of color is knowing that it is all about light! It is that little “oomph” that is missing when you walk into your room.  We tend to spend so much time selecting furniture, paint, flooring, etc. but then the room still feels just that little bit of flat, am I right?  Well, enter the world of color!

Add color without a major makeover

Color is an amazing design element that doesn’t have to break the bank.  In fact, it is one of those wonderful details that can be added in a variety of ways, simply.  Spring is the perfect time to think about makeovers and I have a few tips to share with you on how to do that with color – simply! So let’s work together to find a few new ways to bring it all together with a POP of Color!

1. Go for big, colorful art…

interior design, home decor, home accessories, ch interior designs
Add color with oversized wall art

Don’t be afraid to add large colorful accessories to your walls. One large piece may be all you need to get the juices flowing. A colorful canvas, wall tapestry or beautiful framed photography are good places to start.  Or try arranging several smaller ones in a wall collage to create an impressive composition.

2.  Use pillows and throws…

colorful pillows, home decor, ch interior designs
Throw in some colorful pillows

This is one of the easiest and least expensive ways to make your room pop with color. There are so many different patterns and colors that you can pair together. Try a chevron pattern with a floral or a diamond pattern with a stripe. Layer different sizes and shapes as well. Throw in a “throw” in your favorite color.  This will even more interest to your room. The pairings are limitless!

3.  Forgo the neutrals and go for window treatments in a crazy color…

interior design, custom window treatments, ch interior designs
Colorful window treatments make your room pop with color!

Window treatments can be very versatile and serve as a soft backdrop to a room or add that pop of color and pattern that can’t go unnoticed. Try utilizing neutral colors in your large pieces of furniture and pop the color on the windows! There are so many styles of window treatments to choose from.  If you’re looking for something minimal, valances or toppers may do the trick or if you want something more elaborate, try long panels that flank the sides of the windows. Decorative rods and rings add to the impact and complete the total look.

4.  Don’ forget to add a colorful area rug to pull it all together…

Colorful and fun area rugs, CH Interior Designs
Pop in some color with area rugs

An area rug can be the inspiration piece just as a piece of wall art. Begin or finish your ‘pop of color project’ with a colorful area rug. Rugs serve purposes other than adding color and texture to a room. They also add acoustics and comfort underfoot. Too many hardwood or tile surfaces in a home can create a cold feel and the echoing of sounds.  Continue to add accessories and furniture using the colors from your inspiration piece in the ways mentioned above.

5.  Fill your home with plants and floral arrangements…

home decor, decorating with plants, ch interior designs
Add some natural beauty with plants!

I have found that this simple earthy addition of indoor plants creates warmth to a space and brings the outdoors in.  Whether it’s live greenery or faux flower arrangements, this accessory creates a comfortable and relaxing feel to a room. Live indoor plants have been known also to create health benefits. So, don’t skip this step!

Pulling It All Together

Adding color to your home doesn’t have to be just bright and bold. If you’re not a big fan of bright colors, try some subtle touches of earthy warm colors to do the trick. Get creative and use your imagination to create the look you want and have fun with it! Open the curtains and let the light shine in and see just where you need a little brightness and pop to pull the whole room together.  Adding color can add a statement or let every other element fall into place.  It’s your home, so do it your way!

If you need another perspective or just want some advice on making a particular room more inviting, I am happy to help.  I have some great sources for unusual artwork, window treatments, and accessories – and that may be all you need to get started, so just give me a call!

Design trends for 2019 – What’s in and What’s out- Here are my Favs!

Is your home on trend? Check out these new design trends for 2019!

The beginning of a new year sparks fresh ideas and a reboot personally as well as for our home. Always remember to stick with what you love, regardless of what’s in or out. If your goal  is to refresh your home with a new coat of paint or to add a pretty piece of furniture or to update your kitchen or bath, here are some trends that I found emerging for this year. You may want to try one of these top design trends yourself!

What’s In – Natural Accents

This year, there is great interest in the relationship between nature and people and how bringing the outdoors inside creates a welcoming and refreshing interior of a home. Anything that reminds us of nature such as wood floors, stone, and daylight and plant life will make you and your home feel more comfortable and inviting. With our machine and technology driven society, we are also nostalgic about past craftsmanship and handiwork, and appreciate hand made products. Opportunities to use custom mill-work and crafted materials are very important and never go out of style.

What’s Out – Accent Painted Walls

In the 80’s and 90’s accent walls were an instant way to make a room look like it was decorated.  But instead, try incorporating a textured wall or wainscotting made from milled wood or wall paper on one wall in a room. Our color consultation services are available to help you discover a pop of color for your home.

What’s In – Bold wall Color

Our clients are getting much more adventurous. Sherwin William’s Cavern Clay is an ideal color for flattering and design-forward aesthetics. It’s a warm and earthy hue that is both casual and refined. It can be a backdrop of a playful, welcoming dining room or kitchen. Pair this color with some bright tiles, warm stone and sculptural greenery for a fabulous look and feel to your home.

What’s out – Mid-Century Everything

Mid Century Modern style is a fun and casual look and can bring back memories of days gone by,  but it can be overdone and seem like a time capsule. I prefer to mix things up a little to make your decor style look more interesting.

What’s in-Comfort Everything

From soft carpets underfoot to luxury bedding so comfortable you’ll want to lounge for hours. Add soft pillows and window treatments to create a look that invites you into your special space. Spending the money to get these basic things right are very important and are incredibly gratifying.

Cool grays are heading out

What’s Out-Cool Grays

I’m seeing a trend now of grays being replaced with white and warm neutrals. Let’s face it, gray can be a little boring and drab! If gray is a must have for you be sure to mix it with white and warm wood tones. You can also add a splash of color in your accessories.

Do what you Love!

Regardless of what’s in or out in design trends, its important that your home reflects who you are and what you love! From beautiful accessories to your favorite color palette, every home can be designed to look and feel fabulous!

How to throw a last minute Holiday Party!

Christmas is fast approaching but there’s still time to plan a Holiday Party!

Start with the Table

When planning a holiday party, start with your table decor. Toss on that pretty red table cloth or table runner you have stored from last year. Dust off that tiered cake stand and layer it with a variety of cookies and candies. Snip off some fresh pine branches and layer around the base of it for a natural look. Nestle some pretty ornaments or pine cones in the branches for a natural look.  Or if you want a little bling, colorful bulbs will do the trick!
Whether you use paper or china, decorate the table with pretty holiday Christmas plates, napkins and cups. In addition, add some real or battery operated candles for ambient lighting.

Holiday Table setting
Set a beautiful table!

Then the Food

Stick with your favorite finger foods at your holiday party. Fresh foods that needs little or no preparation are a great start. A veggie dish can be easily made to elicit the colors of the season. A festive beet and arugula salad takes about 10 minutes to throw together but looks beautiful as a holiday dish. Try making No Bake candy or cookies. They save time and are delicious. This no bake Christmas cookie recipe is one of my favorites and its very festive too!  In addition, add a charcuterie plate with some exotic cheeses and meats. Present these choices on holiday serving dishes to wet the appetite!

Easy Holiday
No Bake cookies!

Don’t forget the Scents

The holiday scents abound this time of year. From pine and balsam, to cinnamon and spices, an easy way to add holiday fragrance to your party is to simmer some apple cider on the stove with mulling spices. This will make guests feel comfortable and create mingling. To welcome your guests in the living room try adding some pine and balsam potpourri in a bowl near the front door.

Try your own recipe!

Always add Music

It’s the most wonderful time of the year! Nothing lifts the spirit and sets the mood more than holiday music. Stream some of your favorites and let them play throughout the entire party. The classics are always a favorite but mix in some contemporary as well to appeal to everyone present.

Holiday music sets the mood!

Most of all Enjoy!

Of course, a Holiday party is for enjoying the time spent with the people you love. Even more important than the decor, food, scents and music! So, remember to keep your last minute holiday party simple and fun. Yule be glad you did!

Happy Decorating!

Brighter and bolder are going to be a big hit for fall trends this year.   How do you pull this off with success you might ask? Try pairing this blue hue  with cinnamon and orange, natural woods, and cream. In addition, I recommend starting small with this hue and see how you like it in your interiors before adding more. A few additional items in  these colors I suggest looking for are: candle sticks, lanterns, window treatments, throw pillows and blankets. Stop by my new retail boutique or send me a message if you’d like more help implementing one of these colors to your home!

Add mood with matte black

Beautiful Farmhouse fall decor

Ah-ha, another color to keep your eyes peered for this fall! This one can be rather easy to bring to your fall style this year. I love matte black light fixtures and recommend looking for these if you’re wanting to add some matte black this season. The black color adds a dark tone of fall, while lanterns, lamps and lighting add warm hues to your interiors during those chilly days and nights!

Cozy up the bedroom or living room with prints and fur

Colorful pillows and cozy throw

My favorite way to add new style and flare to a bedroom this fall is with pillows and throws!  If you’re wanting a fall bedroom to like you’ve seen in the magazines, mix and match. Bedding sets are on a decline, while mixing and matching colors and textiles are on the rise. By creating your own look you will add a sense of unique style to your bedroom – plus it can be a lot of fun! I recommend trading your white sheets or coverlet for patterns or solids.  Also, if you’re like me and love a cozy retreat, faux fur throw blanket or pillows are a fantastic way to complete your cozy oasis.

From copper to brass

Brass Coffee table adds brightness to a room!

Copper has been trending in home decor for sometime now, and while copper is quite timeless, the trend has recently changed to brass. Although brass is quite similar to copper, it does have a lighter tone to it. Similar to the copper trend, you can add brass to your home décor through furniture accents, and accessories. This is a great way to start a new fall trend in your home.

Smooth and silky velvet

Velvet is a luxurious looking and feeling fabric that you just can’t keep your hands off of. This fabric is sure to be a perfect way to welcome fall into your interiors! The thing I love about velvet is that it doesn’t take much to make a statement. For example, by adding one piece of velvet furniture or a couple accessories the mood of your interior will change. Furthermore, if you’re seeking to add a visual wow factor, a little luxe and a sense of coziness, velvet is the way to go.

Remember, your home and interiors are most importantly about your style and what you like. Just because these are trending, doesn’t mean you need to go and throw out all of spring’s trends. Nor do you need to implement every trend every season. Similarly, some trends you will like, others you won’t, and that’s okay! In contrast, trends are a great way to keep up with refreshing your style and trying new things. Finally, I hope you enjoy some of the fall trends this year, and let me know how I can help you with transforming your home for the fall season.

Yikes! 5 Common Interior Design Mistakes to Learn From

Check out our list of common interior design mistakes before starting your next project and spare yourself the painful interior design mistakes!

1.  Ignoring Function

Small_Furniture_DSC_7746

A well-designed room is great, but if it is dysfunctional and frustrating, it will hardly be worth it. Believe it or not, functionality is often overlooked when planning interior design projects. For example, an entertainment room lacking rugs, window treatments, and other sound absorbing materials, is likely to be a pain. Likewise, a beautiful office lacking good lighting isn’t going to be of much use.

Furthermore, make sure you’re considering where your guests will sit and move about in your common areas. Will they be able to walk easily throughout the home? Are there plenty of places to set a cup of tea or a snack while watching TV? These are all things you must consider when designing your interiors.

2.  Drab Color Scheme

Another common mistake we see is a poor color scheme or lack of one entirely. While the crisp and clean look is desirable, you need to consider a color scheme to ensure your bright and airy room doesn’t end up looking boring. Adding a color scheme can be rather simple by adding in throw blankets, throw pillows, curtains, and accessories. These are all easily interchangeable and add something interesting to your interiors. While it may be simple, it does take time and planning in order to be successful.

Look around your room; is there a color you can easily mix in with your current look? Should you get rid of a few items to clear a slate for a new color scheme? From there, decide on a color scheme you want to incorporate. In addition, take photos of your interiors to reference back on while you’re shopping. This can be helpful in visualizing what your new look will be, and help when deciding how to place items throughout the room. Lastly, pay careful attention on placing your color scheme throughout your room, rather than on one shelf or area. A color scheme is meant to tie your room together into one cohesive look.

3.  Too Much In One Place

Small_Dining_DSC_7682

One of the most dangerous interior design mistakes you can make is over furnishing and over decorating. Some individuals have so many wonderful collections of furniture, lamps, and accessories that they want to show it all off! While we understand wanting to show off all your beloved items, we encourage you to choose less.

One technique you can try is making a list of all your favorite home items, circle 10 of your favorites, and then choose 5 of your top favorites. From there, make sure to highlight those top 5 items while keeping the rest for another room, another time, or it may even be time to sell them for new items! By choosing less, you’re able to really highlight those favorite items by keeping clutter around them at bay. We know this may be tough at first, but we assure you those favorite items will be noticed a lot more when you’ve cleared some room to let them shine!

4.  Outdated Accessories

Whether we like it or not, there is a time for getting rid of the old and adding in the new and updating your spaces. Likewise, if you have outdated cabinets, accessories, drapes, and lighting, it’s really going to date your interiors. Many of our clients often overlook the importance of the little details. For example, they paint the walls and get new furniture and accessories, but don’t understand why their interiors don’t look quite right. The reason is often all those little outdated accessories getting in the way. Therefore, the solution is often replacing old lights, and updating curtains, cabinets and hardware.

We understand there’s a time and a budget for everything, but make sure you consider updating those outdated details when you’re trying to re-design. Plus, updating your lights, hinges, and cabinet hardware doesn’t have to cost you a fortune. If you’re willing to spend a little time on it, there are many spectacular spray paints you can purchase and easily update those rusted gold details with a fresh gold, silver, or bronzed copper!

5.  Not Hiring a Professional When Necessary

As we previously mentioned, there are many simple and affordable ways to update your interiors. However, big or advanced projects often require a professional for the best planning and execution. Or if you’re just not sure where to start, a professional can guide you along to help you avoid these mistakes along with many others. In addition, professionals will help ease the stress and uncertainty of a re-design and can instill confidence in you about your project.
