How color affects us-mind and body benefits
Color has been around forever it seems, but it was the early Egyptians who studied the power of colors and applied it to every aspect of life and their lives. Color art that we practice today, whether it’s adding a pop of color in the paint we choose for our walls, the fabric we choose for fabric for our draperies, or the wall art we add to our living room wall, has its origins dated nearly 2,000 years ago.
There are three components of color. The actual hue or color such as red, blue, or green. Then there is saturation which is how rich and pure a color is and finally, brightness which is how close it is to white. Highly saturated colors are energizing while brightness is calming.
So just how does adding a pop of color affect our lives? The components of color affect our lives by making us feel happy, calm and energized. Add a pop of color with a large, medium and small dose of color in every room. Here are some to tips on how to use your favorite colors when decorating your home.
Warm Up with Yellow
If your house is drafty or the area you live in is chilly or your room is oversized, use yellow touches to warm things up. Using a sunny shade can make you feel warmer which is why using yellow for entryways or mudrooms is a great way to make you feel comfortable as soon as you walk in!
Create with Green
If you look at nature, you’ll find that the main hue is green, the color of creativity. Green has been known to bump up people’s performance on a creative task. From soft sage to Kelly green, all shades have been linked to creativity and creative thinking. So, before you start that project, take a walk in nature or paint your craft room a shade of green. And be sure to place your office desk near a window for a brain boost!
Energize with Red
Red is a very emotionally intense color. It is associated with energy, strength, power and passion. Use red in your home where there is activity such as the family room or in your workout room. You can even paint an accent wall and pair it with neutrals in the bedroom. Green is a compliment to red so you can use green to balance out red in a room.
Cool off with Blue
Genius ideas sometime come to you “out of the blue”. The reason is blue has been linked to a sense of openness and problem solving. So, when you’re looking for an answer to a difficult problem or dilemma, look up in the sky on a clear day. The answer may just pop into your mind! Blue is also associated with tranquility because we relate it to the ocean and the sky. In addition, it can influence your body by making you feel cool when you walk into a blue room. Think about adding blue to your home where you want a relaxing and open feel.
Get excited with Orange
Orange is associated with meanings of joy, warmth, heat, sunshine, enthusiasm, and success. It also promotes emotional energy. This color works well in kitchens and dining room where the energy is usually social and active. Try painting a feature wall in your kitchen or dining rooms to entice the appetite! Orange is also associated with heat as in the summer sun or autumn harvest. If you have an extra-large area that you want to “warm up”, try a rich saturated shade of orange.
A pop of color is wonderful but remember it’s OK to love your white walls! You can always add a splash of color in your accessories. There is no right or wrong color. It’s what you love that makes for a happy, beautiful and comfortable home.
